I’m trying to convey a number of things with I’ve Got the Blues. One is the lazy rhythm of the blues and the smoky dark sound that is associated with the blues as music. I’ve spent a lot of time listening to Billie Holliday, and from her sound you hear the depth of feeling sourced in the deep dark places of the soul and the bitter experiences of life.
Another is the swings, the valleys and peaks of life and emotion. Sometimes you’re up. Sometimes you’re down. Sometimes you can hardly get around. You pick up, and just when there seems to be light at the end of a tunnel, there comes the on-rushing train.
